With the exception of the JO, the model "J"
converters and COBRA style converters are interchangeable for most applications.
The main difference between the "J" and the COBRA, is the primary valve. All J
models incorporate a flat rubber seat bonded to a steel spring bar. This flat
seat closes off the primary orifice when the pressure reaches 1.5 P.S.I. In the
event of over pressurization, due to contamination or freezing, the flat seat
may become damaged causing converter failure. The flat seat and spring were
replaced by a pin and o-ring arrangement in the COBRA style converters. A steel
ring was also machined into the pin. This ring contacts the primary orifice in
an over pressurization situation. This prevents damage to the o-ring. The COBRA
style converters offer superior resistance to primary valve failure. The
standard diaphragm used in COBRA converters are Fluorosilicone. This
material is much more resistant to damage from impurities in propane.
The CB-30177, while being appropriate for any application
where a JB is used, was designed for closed loop systems. This converter is
based on the COBRA. The differences are closer tolerances of the internal
components for more consistent fuel control, and a second threaded opening in
the secondary cover. The unused opening in this cover may be plugged. At least
one of these openings must remain open for proper operation. If venting to the
atmosphere, it is preferable to leave the port in the 3:00 o'clock position open
with an S7-1 screen.
The optional silicone diaphragms for LP components
offer more resistance to damage from exposure to propane, and it's inherent
impurities. Silicone is also a lighter material than hydrin. This lighter weight
helps improve the response time of the secondary valve.
AFS Recommends the use of a
thermostat on all converters to maintain consistent fuel temperature and
prevent premature failure.
